She turned her face away from his and began busying her mind with menial tasks. An awkward silence occupied the space between them. “Well, aren’t you gonna say anything? Please, say something.” The silence continued. She couldn’t imagine what more there was to discuss. In so few words, he had destroyed everything. Furious thoughts ran through her mind about all the times he’d said he was working when he wasn’t; she wondered if he was ever where he claimed to be. When he drove to the grocery story, was that code for being with her? Whenever he claimed to be taking his mother to a doctor’s appointment – she quickly halted the stream of consciousness. It was too much to consider, and she knew that if she let her thoughts run away with her, she’d never find her way back.
“I forgive you,” she said in a near whisper. “What? I-I mean, thank you. I’m sorry, I’m just confused. I did something horrible, you’ve ignored me for days, and now you forgive me? Well…do you want to talk abou – “I have to get ready for bed,” she interrupted. “You know I have that presentation in the morning. Can we talk about it tomorrow?” He stood dumbfounded at this revelation, untimely as it was. “Yeah, of course… I love you,” he replied almost in a tone questioning whether he himself knew it to be true. “Goodnight,” she said, leaving the room almost as quickly as she came. © All rights reserved
